IPL can be performed on a range of areas including the face, neck, chest, shoulders and hands — anywhere that shows signs of sun damage, pigmentation or redness.
During the treatment, pulses of light are delivered to the skin using a handheld device. Most clients describe the sensation as a warm snapping feeling.
Treatments are relatively quick and well tolerated. Some mild redness may occur immediately after treatment but usually settles within a few hours.
Most clients require 3–5 treatments spaced approximately 4 weeks apart depending on the skin concern being treated.
IPL may not be suitable for clients who:
- Are pregnant
- Have recently tanned skin or sunburn
- Are using photosensitising medications
- Have active skin infections or open wounds
- Have certain medical conditions affecting skin healing
- Have used isotretinoin (Roaccutane) within the recommended timeframe
A consultation will always be performed prior to treatment to ensure it is safe for you.
- Avoid sun exposure and fake tan for 2 weeks prior
- Avoid active skincare ingredients such as retinol or strong acids for 3–5 days before treatment
- Ensure the skin is clean and free from makeup or skincare products
After treatment you may experience mild redness or warmth in the skin.
- Avoid sun exposure and wear SPF daily
- Avoid hot showers, saunas and intense exercise for 24 hours
- Avoid active skincare ingredients for 3–5 days
- Keep the skin hydrated with gentle moisturisers
Pigmented spots may darken slightly before naturally fading or flaking away over the following days.
